The Family

Earnest world travelers and passionate about the decorative arts, Betty and Bill Cooper visited some of the world’s finest places as well as many paths less traveled; taking them to all corners of the globe.  Betty’s eclectic and elegant taste ranged from 17th century porcelain to contemporary indigenous crafts; Bill loved Betty so there were never any objections to her many acquisitions along the way.

Their 10,000 sq ft estate holds this vast collection from fine European and early American furniture to antique European porcelain, ancient Chinese, as well as Mesoamerican and indigenous collectables. Having lived several years in Guadalajara, Mexico they developed an appreciation for Mexican, Spanish Colonial, and Italian Furniture, paintings, and statuary. Betty loved exploring small villages in Jalisco and Michoacán, collecting local folk art, and figurines. They cherished the work of famous and local artists alike.

While Living in San Diego they were avid Bridge masters and donors to the  Zoological Society. They enjoyed entertaining  large groups, where  Betty used her true floral design talents to adorn her “over the top” themed dinner parties.

Their wonderful 68-year marriage, 5 children and love of learning and discovery makes this estate a true wonder.

Featured Artist

Jeanne Valentine was born in Paris around the turn of the century and came to the US in 1940.

She designed dresses in the 1950’s, then shifted to papier mache work in the 1960’s when she moved to Mexico and opened a shop in San Miguel. She trained local young people in the exacting techniques of the French craft of papier mache.

Her delicately crafted, sophisticated papier-mache creations were found in the most elegant shops of New York, San Francisco, Dallas, Paris and London.

The work of Jeanne Valentine is considered to be the top of the line for Paper Mache and Paper Mache Mexico Folk Art.

Her pieces are enthusiastically collected and highly sought after today. Several examples of her work will be available for sale at this estate.
